2011 Experimental Free Handicap

The Experimental Free Handicap ranks colts and fillies who were 2-year-olds in 2011 and helps determine the dual qualifiers for the Kentucky Derby. Hansen and Union Rags, top two finishers in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (right), have the co-high weight assignments of 126 pounds while Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner My Miss Aurelia has the top weight on the filly list at at 124 pounds. Horse Racing Handicapping Angles for Each Race Track

Recently I was asked by a handicapper if I could give some good angles for a track that he planned to play this winter. No matter what season it is, the best method I’ve found for dealing with track specific horse racing angles is to research the track models and trainer standings for that track.

Horse Racing Tips From the Stable Cat

Don’t you wish you could get inside tips about the horses that would allow you to know when one was ready to win, or perhaps, when the favorite was off his feed and not likely to win? They used to say the stable cat was the best handicapper because he lived with the horses. That was probably true, but I’ve never seen a feline in the betting lines. Inside information, however, can be dynamite, but you have to know how to get it and when to use it and when to pass it up.

Using Horse Racing Trainer Moves the Truth and Fiction for Handicappers

There’s a lot of talk these days about making money betting on horses by using trainer moves. The suppliers of past performances often list them right along with a horses running lines, along with the actual ROI (return on investment) for the specific move. An example would be, down 2 classes +3.10, meaning that when that trainer drops a horse two levels in they win enough to make a tidy profit.

Sunshine Millions Classic

The annual Sunshine Millions at Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita and while it is not what it once was, it is still a great day of racing at the two tracks. At Gulfstream Park there are six races for Florida-breds and at Santa Anita there are three races for California-bred or sired horses. The interesting aspect about the cards is that there is a pick-6 wager that links the last three races at Gulfstream Park and the three races at Santa Anita.

Saturday was Sunshine Millions day at Santa Anita Park with five stakes races on the card, headlined by the Santa Monica Stakes (G1) won by Home Sweet Aspen and the Santa Ysabel Stakes (G3) won by Willa B Awesome (left). Get results, charts, and photos for all five races here.

Handicapping horse races can be a very time consuming and frustrating experience. In plain English, picking winners is one of the hardest things some of us ever try and most people lose money at the horse races. While some of us enjoy trying to solve the puzzle of a horse race, at the end of the day, when we’ve spent so much time and energy, only to have lost money, there is “…no joy in Mudville,” as they say.
