January 1st marks the beginning of the campaign toward the Kentucky Derby and the Triple Crown with the Gulfstream Park Derby. Sometimes the best way to describe what we do when we handicap a race is to say that we weed out the legitimate contenders from the phonies or horses that have no chance of winning. To be accurate, any runner in a race does have some chance, but the actual possibility may be so small that it isn’t worth considering, that is, unless the odds are right. As you handicap a horse race you try to put the horses in order from most likely winner to least likely winner.

It has been an established institution for a long time and was sold to bettors as a good deal, but is pari mutuel wagering really as good as it appears and could there be a better way for horse players to wager on horse racing? Who really benefits? Horse racing handicapping is one of the toughest ways of making a living as a gambler. There are several reasons for that, including the nature of the game with so many variables, but then again, there is also the problem of operating in the dark and not knowing what you are buying.

Horse Racing Handicapping System Factors and Angles

There are several kind of horse racing systems. Some systems rely on weighting the factors in a race according to the make up of the race of the kind of race. For instance, in a maiden race where raw speed is the factor that matters the most, a higher point value might be given to the horse with the fastest average speed. In a short sprint of five furlongs, post position and early pace might be given the most weight.

Indian Charlie euthanized at age 16

Top stallion Indian Charlie, sire of three champions including Uncle Mo, had to be euthanized on December 15, 2011, at Airdie Stud in Kentucky after a battle with cancer. Find out more about his career both on and off the track here.
